The Dreams are Back

by Jeffery L. Turk, Sr.

       The Dreams are back.
          you *know* the dreams -
            Where there is no escape
I run, and run, and run
                no where to run -
                  nowhere to hide -
                    no going home.

        The Dreams are back.
          The Dreams...my friends, the Dreams.
            At least in the Dreams
              I *can* run
I am not stuck on four legs....
                  or wheels...
The Dreams can be my friends.

        The Dreams are back.
          I fight the enemy -
            I kick, I hit, I claw!
To wake and find my first wife
                or my second
                  or my girlfriend
                    unconscious and bleeding.

        The Dreams are back.
In the Dreams I know who I am
            and who you are.
I am not surrounded by those
                whose priorities are new cars
                  or getting laid -
                    but staying alive.

        The Dreams are back.
I thought I'd left the Dreams behind.
            Six months without the Dreams.
Six months of drug induced slumber,
                Six months of thinking
                  I was healed.
                    The Dreams are back.

        The Dreams are back.
          The Dreams are back.
            The Dreams are back.
              The Dreams are back.
                The Dreams are back.
                  The Dreams are back.
                    THE DREAMS ARE BACK!
