Message is: Am looking for any inforamtion pertaining to Daniel Joseph Purnell who joined the marines,I believe in 1967 or 1968. I was told he reicieved a "Purple Heart" back in "68" or "69" but cannot find any info regarding this. There was, as I was told back in "70" or "71" a story that made news headlines at Logan Airport, in Boston, when Mr. Purnell was returning home from his last tour in Vietnam. I was told he injured and possibly killed a protestor, when the protestor charged him and another marine at the opening doors at Logan with an American Flag while several protestors chanted the charger on. Mr Purnell defending himself with the skills he was trained to use as a Marine(Special Forces, Recong) and supposedly pushed the protestors nose up into his brain and eventually after a long hospital stay, sadly died.... Mr. Purnell was jailed and prosecuted as the story goes. His case was eventually dismissed, after Mr. Purnell spent much time in jail. It was supposedly ! reported that there were state police and news reporters at the airport that captured on vidieo and reported at Mr. Purnell's trial in his defense. I have yet to find any info of any of this to have taken place. I have searched the web and found nothing. Any info pertaining to this story would be greatly appreciated. Message is: Robert was in Viet Nam about 2 years and was due to come home in a couple of months, he was 22. He was killed in the Tet Offensive at Dia Do on April 30, 1968. He was respected and well liked by his men as shown in a book written about his platoon by Gerald R. Gems. Called VIET NAM VIGNETTES, TALES OF THE MAGNIFICANT BASTARDS. He earned many citations including the Silver Star, Bronze Stare, Purple Heart,and as special tribute, a street was named after him in Camp Pendleton CA. He is buried at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach CA.
