Message is: My mom just confessed a that my brother's father is not who he thought he was. Turns out he is Thomas Charles(?) Ferrara USMC from Colorado, most likely Colorado Springs. He did at least 2 tours in Vietnam and was at MCRD San Diego in the late 60's. My mom, who at that time was Frances Miller, was listed on his next of kin. She received a telegram that he had lost both legs and an eye while in Vietnam. And that they sent him to the VA hospital in Colorado Springs. It must have been right around 1969 or 1970. She thinks he was a corporal or lieutenant and while at MCRD was doing something with radio, communications or engineering.

Message is: Irish was a helicopter pilot--served in RVN 63-64 flying UH-34's. I first met him aboard USS Iwo Jima LPH-2 in 64. He and I were stationed together at MCAS Beaufort, SC in H&HS in 66-67. When he left Beaufort he transitioned into either armed HU1E's or Cobras and served another tour in RVN. After that tour he was assigned to HMX-1 at Quantico, VA. He was released from active duty in either 73 or 74. He raced motocycles in moto- corsses in his spare time. His wife's name was Judy. At Beaufort a Marine SSGT names Cominski (Spelling?) helped him keep his motocycles running.

Both of my grandparents died recently, and in sorting through their belongings, I found an original letter from Randy to his parents written soon after the Tet Offensive. Message is: It is about 6:15 am here in Oregon on March 19th. I am on a quest. I was the Platoon Commander of the 1st Platoon, B Company, 1st Tank Battalion on Operation Mameluke Thrust beginning on May 18, 1968. During the operation at a location where the road leading to the Thuong Duc Valley comes close to the hills bordering the Song Vu Gia River my platoon in support of the 1st Battalion 7th Marines became engaged in a fire fight with NVA units entrenched on the hillside. During the course of the engagement a unit of Marines tried to make their way from the base of the hillside to our lines situated along the road. They were struck by enemy mortar fire. All in the unit were either wounded or killed. I am trying to find any of the survivors. A Lieutenant who served with 1/7 beginning in June 1968 thinks this unit may have been part of D Company 1/7.
