Only to let him know he is remembered fondly, to return a valuable gift, and to tie up this loose end of the fabric of my life before it is too late. Life is too short, I think, and the good things in it ought to be given their due. Message is: Wishing to be in touch with "Dan" Daley who I served with beginning at Khe Sahn and other places in "I" Corps. Dan and I attended Artillery School together. Then I spent 3 months "soft" duty at Language School (DWI/WC) in Monterey. We hooked up again when they dropped my ass at Khe-Sahn during the "Siege" When I was "short", I was transferred to "A"-1 -13. Dan and jRobert P. "Big Mac" MacMinn (from Shamoken, Penn) were in new barracks with a bunch of new guys the night before going home at H- 1 -13 when sappers attacked. A satchel charge went off under Dan's rack. He and Big Mac had chosen racks near the door. Mac was out "getting some" but Dan was wounded bad. I spent some time trying to catch up with him. I think he went to hospitals in Phillipines, maybe Japan. I got an "early out" in Apr. 69 and tried to locate him at Treasure Island. The damn Lifers there gave me a ration of shit. I think Dan was gone anyway. He'd told me he lived in the county Minneapolis was in. When I got up there, I couln't find him in the phone book. I went to St. Paul and spoke to the Lt. Governor. He told me the "Privacy Act" prevented anyone from giving me Dan's status or location. I wrote a letter and left it there. Subsequently, I've got drunk, got on the phone & called VFW's to see if he is a member. No luck. Would sure appreciate hearing from or about Dan. Only buddy I've kept in touch with is "Red" McCollum in Michigan. He has not heard from or of Dan in the years past either. Message is: I wore Major Hildebrand's POW/MIA bracelet when I was in High School in 1972. The date on it that tells when he was captured is 12-18-71. When Major Hildebrand was released from capture, he wrote asking me for the bracelet. I wrote back asking if I could keep it, and he let me. Many years have passed, but I still have his letters and the bracelet. Recently, the replica of the Wall was nearby, and as I was telling my High School daughter about the bracelet, etc, I started wondering whatever happened to Maj. Hildebrand. I would really like to know how his life was after coming home, how his children are, how the war affected his life, and if he enjoyed his retirement years. Message is: I was born in Vietnam. Hilliard Davis as far as I know is my father. I have been searching since I first recognized that I look like him. I am now thirty one years old. There wasn't much information to go on. My mother has since re-married. At the time when my parents met, there was a language barrier and also a lack of understanding of what what the US was on my mother's half. I realize that during times of war, babies can be born and left. For some, it happens outside of their control. When we left Vietnam, all of our papers were burned. We took what we could, but that wasn't much. My father disappeared when I was only three months old. I wouldn't recognize him today if he wlaked past me and vice versa. Social security numbers (I don't think were being used at this time); I think it was RA numbers. No, I don't have that either. He was either in the army or the marines. My mother and I believed that he came from Newark, New Jersey or somewheres around there.
