Initially, he was in the branch at Hill 35 north of the Chu-Lai main base (where I located). Since I was the company driver I transferred to Danang about a week ahead of all the others (including Ray). We were exceptionally good friends and when he was scheduled to "take the bird" our C.O. (Lt. Walter New) knew how close we were and allowed me the privilege of doing a little "joy riding" before driving him to the airfield for final farewell. Met him again at Marine Barracks, NB, Treasure Island, San Francisco where he was stationed (?) when I returned to CONUS and was awaiting separation form USMC. Ray's original hometown/home address is: 406 West 7th Street, Newton Kansas. Have not seen/heard from Ray (c. 1969) when I received an invitation to his wedding (married a girl from California); at that time I was living in Bronx, New York.

Message is: Howard and I entered the Marines, served in the same places Parris Island, Camp Geiger, Camp Lejeune, 29 Palms, Chu-Lai, Danang) together with the exception that while in Danang went to the branch P.O. in An Hoa while I stayed in Danang; I had to stay in Danang since I was the company driver. We both received our orders home at the same time and when we were finally reunited in Danang we hugged each other, joined hands and danced around like two kids doing "ring-around-the rosie" since we had "made it". Would have made a wonderful advertisement for integration: a black man (Holman) and a white man (me) hugging each other repeatedly, holding hands and jumping up and down like we had just won beaucoup bucks in a lottery. The only difference is that I went home on 3 Dec. 1967, a day or two later than he. Over the years I heard through the grapevine that he (Holman) had become so disgusted/disheartened by the racial mess/prejudice here in America that he moved to Europe (France?). At the New York Vietnam Memorial Dedication in 1985 I tried to search for him but, alas, to no avail. I don't know how much he has changed in the intervening 30 years (hope not at all), but back then he was an extraoridinarily fine fellow in all respects.
