He died on June 17, 1966 (reported missing at first, declared dead on June 22, 1966) He was one of 20+ individuals killed in the crash of a Navy C-130 that was hit by ground fire shortly after take off from Vietnam. I was told that his was the only body found in the wreckage. He was called "Parks" by civilian friends and family, and "Mac" by AF friends. Message is: I'm an active duty Air Force major studying the Battle of Tan Son Nhut Air Base on 31 Jan 68. Sgt Alonzo J. Coggins was manning bunker 051 along with four others when they were attacked by three battalions in column formation. Everyone except Sgt Coggins was killed at their post. Although badly burned and suffering other injuries, Sgt Coggins stayed at the bunker while it was taken by NVA/VC forces for approximately eight hours. It is unknown whether he played dead or was simply taken prisoner; however, toward the end of the battle Sgt Coggins either escaped or was released by his captors. Bunker 051 was the center of gravity for the battle. The other four defenders were postumously awarded the silver star...Sgt Coggins was not. I understand he was evacuated by aircraft to Japan shortly after the battle and may have suffered long-term hospitilization and mental-health care. Message is: I was a teenager when I met Mr. Camron at the Royal Thai Air Force base in Don Muang, approximately 30 km from Bangkok, Thailand. I beleive the year was in the early 1960's and he was on his way back to the US. At that time I was living with my family on base and was trying to earn extra money polishing shoes for the GI's stationed overthere. Since I could speak English slighly better than most of my friends, I also became an unofficial gopher for Mr. Camron and his friends. Now, come to think of it, I realized that my friends were smarter pretending not to understand English when asked to do chores.
