Message is: Steve was born in Abilene, Texas. His parents divorced and his mother remarried. He may have used his step father's last name during school and went by Steve Lantz. His maternal grandfather's last name was Peterson and he was the general manager of the Settles Hotel in Big Spring, Texas during the mid 60's. Steve attended school in Abilene, Texas and then enrolled at Big Spring High School in February 67 and graduated in May 1967. He joined the Army immediately and used Abilene, Texas as his HOR. He reverted to his legal name of Allison. He would have taken basic at either Fort Bliss, Texas or Fort Polk, Louisiana. He completed medic training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He began his tour in Vietnam on 11-22-67 and was assigned as a medic for HHT, 2d Squadron, 11th ACR. He was killed on July 9, 1968 in hostile action. He is buried in Abilene, Texas. Because of his Big Spring connection, he is honored on the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Mi! dland, Texas as well as the Big Spring Memorial. Both groups would like information on him and also a picture for the repective memorials.

My duster was called "The Paris Persuaders", the dusters crews I knew were "Have Guns will travel" and "The Iron Coffin". My driver was shot in the face and my Cannoner was George Lathan. Anyone that knows me- Danny Penton or "Lucky" of course we were all known by nicknames or of this action please contact me. We were hit by 2 claymore mines, small arms fire and tear gas. My sargeant (E6) jumped off the tract and ran off into the woods. That was the last time we saw him. We talked to other veterans that went to FSB Lanyard but the name was changed after Lt. Pace was killed to FSB Pace - which was later overrun by the North Vietnamese.

My grandfather was a warrant officer who was in charge of the mess hall at Headquarters 23rd, 13th Artillery Group, 2nd Battalion, Phu Loi, Binh Duong. My grandparents lost contact with each other after the war ended. Most of the information that my grandmother had of my grandfather were destroyed when the VC came. All that I know about my grandfather is that his last name was Smith (which is not really helpful since its very common). He was of average height and was in his late 20s to early 30s. The unit was located at Nha Trang, Vietnam and supported the Central Highlands with helicopter recovery support. I was assigned as the supply, mail, and graves registration clerks. I have filed some claims with the Virginia and Texas VA as a result of injuries while I was assigned with the 339th Trans Co. I was injured in Dec 64 and June 65. I did a second tour in Vietnam, with the 4th Infantry Division, at Pleiku, assigned as the S-4 NCO, and NCOIC of the Graves Regisration section. During April 1969 enroute from the 4th ID my medical records were lost and never recovered.

I also have many newspaper clippings about him. I know he was awarded several medals while serving in Vietnam and was killed while helping to evacuate wounded soldiers. Message is: I am looking for an old friend. I wrote to Steve when he was in Vietnam. He is from Silver Creek NY and was probably born in 1949-50. Steve was wounded several times, and he was a highly decorated soldier. He served several tours, right in the thick of the fight, and was actually lost behind enemy lines for quite a while. The last I heard, he was a sergeant at Ft. Bragg or Ft. Benning, and was teaching hand-to-hand combat. I believe he was discharged in 1972-73.
