One, the pilot who rescued the two infantrymen who had been dropped from a medivac, and the other who flew a loach into a thick cloud to pick off 5 or 6 wounded men when no others would fly onto the mountain. He was a black soldier who shows from his casulty record to have been in the Army for 4 years. His date of birth is May 5, 1942 and from birth records in Texas, I was able to locate a birth record froa Charles E. Fagett who was born the same day in Marshall, Texas. I think it is the same person. Father is listed as Eligah Fagett and mother is Willie Mae Howard Fagett. This soldier died from multiple fragmentary wounds within 3 weeks of being in Vietnam. He is listed as a 11C40. I did find a dedication on a site that listed someone who knew him but did not leave a e-mail address. He lissted on all of the memorials in Odessa as well as with the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's memorial at www.veteransmemoral.us. Message is: ROGER HAWKES was a Combat Medic with the 1ST Cav. He passed away after coming home. I wanted to find out if he may have died from any wounds. His widow is in a state of denial and will not talk about Roger's death. We both graduated from Colonel White HS, Dayton, OH, in 1962. I went directly in the Army, and served in Germany (3 tours) and in the Nam (also 3 times). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Message is: This vet treated me very kindly and gentlemanly over several days of our trip together while he was going from New Mexico to visit a friend in the DC area, in a red convertible. He told me many stories. He picked me up near Albuqurque, and left me off at my friend's law office near Dupont Circle. He told me stories of terrible things done by the north vietnamese to a woman he loved in Vietnam. I want to thank him for his trust and care of me at that time.

Message is: As I was arriving in country, he was leaving on the same plane. We passed each other as he was going to the plane and I was l just coming into the country. We said a few words to each other and he went his way, and I went mine. We met in Basic and trained togeather in Fort Dix then to Fort Gordon for OCS. He did not finish. I had not spoken to him again until we met on the tarmack in June of 68.
