Message is: I was involved in the rescue of 2 Army Warrant Officers whose FAC (Cessna?) crashed at Ton Son Nhut AB in 1968 or 1969. They got caught in turbulence from a "heavy" that they were following and went down on the side of the runway. My buddy and I treated and took them to 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon. He went thru basic training, was trained as a cook, then sent as a ground force. We lost communication. I found him 32 years later at the Vets Hosp., in Long Beach, CA in the psychiatric ward, I didn't see him but his son did. I was a tremendous let down for his son when Ralph was transferred back to San Diego without notice. Since then, I believe he may have been forcibily committed. All I can remember is that you were from Montana and I enjoyed being your buddy through training. I have no idea if you finished OCS or where you were assigned. I am not sure that I made the right decision in not going to OCS at Fort Belvoir with you. I ended up with the 326th Engineers of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. I had quite an experience there. You probably don't know but a number of the guys we trained with were killed in a rocket attack within a week of getting to Vietnam. Message is: I am Hepatitis C positive and completed my boot camp at Fort Polk, La during the above time frame. I am trying to locate the above people because they may have recieved their immunizations from air injectors. Air injectors may transmit viruses such as Hepatitis C. If enough people from this era can be located and tested for Hepatitis C., a service related disability may be established. It is also possible that one of the vaccines if serum based may have been infected with Hepatitis C. Currently out of all Veterans that have tested Hepatitis C positive, 62.7% are from approximately the l969-1970 era. Contact me for further information. Many people who have Hepatitis C are not aware they have it. It can easily be detected by blood samples. The VA is offering free testing for all Vietnam Vets. Message is: I first met Jim in a homeless shelter where I was a voluteer and he was staying, a few years later when he was doing a little better he moved next door to me, 4838 Griscom Street, Phila.,PA 19124. We recognized each other right away, and developed a great friendship. Jim helped me through many personal struggles, and I likewise helped him, but I could never help him with his alchoholism. When Jim was good, he was a great guy, I think he memorized American history textbooks for a hobby, but when he was bad, he was horrible. He had been planning a binge for awhile and just happened to start this particular one at my wedding, he was the best man, what a memory, it was a dry wedding for everyone but Jim, 3 or 4 cycles later, these cycles could last for months, I and my family were set to move, but before we did, we made sure Jim got into the VA Hospital in Coatesville PA, we visited at the hospital and Jim did real well in there, when he got out he had a few jobs and we kept in touch, one was factory work, and another was as a maintainance man at the Exton Mall, Exton, PA. He changed addresses once or twice out there, and at one point my mail started being returned to me, so I know he moved. I don't know how he is doing, haven't spoke to him in about three years. I've just been thinking about h! im and praying for him. The only thing he ever really asked of me was to make sure he was buried in Arlington cemetary. It seemed to be the only thing that mattered to him. He had children he hadn't seen in years, that he feared approaching. An ex-wife who was pretty hostile to him (understandingly so) and maybe a sister and some neices and nephews. I really would like to see my friend again. He meant alot to me, my wife and kids. I've thought about looking for him before, but thought he may have just wanted a new start where no one knew him, he was supposed to be getting some big money from the VA retroactive and then a monthly check, he could always be pretty independent when he had some money, but he could also blow huge sums of it in small amounts of time. I hope I'm not violating his privacy by looking for him in this way, it's the first time I've tried. I really just couldn't bear for him to think that know one thinks of him, there are a number of others here in Philadelphia who still ask,"Ever hear from Jim?" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Message is: He was with us for a short time, E6 or E7. Fatherly type. Always told us to keep our heads down. Had family back in the world. We were out in the field. One young lad in the platoon was messing with an M60, set it on top the APC. The trigger housing fell out and the M60 went off, firing wildly. The good Sgt was hit in the face. A medic was called and a dustoff arrived quickly. The last we heard he was o.k., only fracturing his jaw. I always wondered what happened to him after that and if he was able to move on.

Unfortunately, you were not persistent, and we lost connection. The McKenna family lived at the corner of Rutledge and Morton Aves. in Rutledge, Pa. until 1966. Father John, moved, with wife Edna and youngest daughter, Karen, to Tillsonburg, Ontario to work. (Ford Mo. Co. in Chester and Pennsauken, NJ closed, leaving him without work. Connections with Gerry Livingston in Export business brought him to Livingston Industries in Tillsonburg.) I was still working and shared an apartment with a female until an unfortunate occurance in August 1966. Shortly thereafter, I hopped a plane to visit my parents and sister...and simply stayed. It was a way of starting over. Met Joe..married a year later.. had three children (the treasures of my life)...had a $$windfall.. It changed my husband. He has had three affairs...mid-life crises the huge motorcycle...the beard....now living with his mother ! !????) Yes, I have suffered, but am now well on my way to the second half of my life, and hopefully, happiness. All three of my grown children (23, 28, 30) will be married in the next year.

Message is: When I was in Vietnam in 1996, I came across a stone marker on the bank of the Perfume River upstream from Hue with the following inscription: "Pohl Bridge. In memory of Colonel Richard Pohl, Division Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, Kiled 21 June 1968 at Fire Support Base Bastogne. He died so that others may be free." The memorial stone was still there in Jan 2000. This is the only comparable American memorial I saw during the years I lived in Vietnam (1991-1996). I have been trying to locate Col. Pohl's relatives in order to give them a photo of the engraved stone. I learned from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC that he was from Dayton, Ohio, but numerous phone calls failed to lead me to anyone who knew him or is related to him. I think his family would be pleased, indeed proud, if they learned of the stone. I would appreciate any assistance in getting hold of Col. Richard Pohl's relatives.
