Message is: Munson was a door gunner on CH-47 Chinook. He was in company "B" 159th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion in the October/December time-frame of 1968. He was liked by many and suddenly transfered out without a word to anyone. Officers and NCO's were very secretive about him. Word was that he was with CID or had been busted for pot posession (you know how rumors go.....) Munson was a real good friend of mine and I have sorely missed him. Message is: At the end of February or beginning of March 1968 a Regiment+ of NVA plus VC units were staging in a valley on the Song Ba River just east of Cung Son for an all out attack on Tuy Hoa South Free World Forces Area (THSAC) that was made of Tuy Hoa Sub Area Command -THSAC, the 91st Med Evac Hospital, 577th Engineer BTN and support units, units of the 173rd and 101st ABN, Engineer and support units, and the ROK White Horse Div (some 50,000 military + dod civilian). Tuy Hoa AFB and THSAC were not major targets like the DMZ, Hue City, DaNang, and others during TET - there were more than a dozen smaller actions, but no all out attack. Tuy Hoa South was the only major area that had not been completely over run up to that point in time and the NVA/VC were preparing to change that. With most of the line units of the 173rd, 101st, and White Horse out in the field in the highlands area - both THSAC and the AFB were very vulnerable. An offensive counter strike (The Tuy Hoa Raid) against the NVA/VC in the Song Ba River valleys 6 to 10 Km west of Tuy Hoa was formulated that included coordinated: - air strikes from Army, Navy, and Air Force planes, off shore Naval bombardment, Army 175mm and 8" guns, and a full heard of Buffalo to make sure. The joint services offensive attack was very successful - enemy casualties were reported as very heavy and the reamaining enemy forces fled back toward Cambodia. Units of the 173rd were called on to do recon and S&D mopup of the targeted valleys shortly after the Tuy Hoa Raid. Timely execution of the locally planned co-ordinated joint services operation prevented many American casualties - that could have reached several thousand. This included the 91st Med - which very well could have been the only US soft target ever to be over run during the entire war. Some 300 to 500 doctors, nurses, and wounded GI's that could not be Med Evaced off shore were a prime target, and would have made for a very tragic story on the TV news broadcasts back in the world at that time. The commander, a retired Army General, that okayed the Raid passed away about five years ago. The two guys that did the Raid's master plan have retired and are living(?). Because of the combined effort on everyone's part, from all services, a lot of us were spared a major catastrophy. If you were there in Tuy Hoa South that night and remember watching or taking part in this action - I'd like to hear from you. Thank you.

Message is: Late in the afternoon of February 20 1968 a single huey was traveling south along the coast from Tuy Hoa headed for NaTrang and then on to Cam Rohn Bay. The report filled Recon or Rangers from the 173rd indicated that because of cloud cover moving on shore that the chopper came in over land instead of staying feet wet. Just before reaching the north side of the point about 4 KM north of NaTrang, the VC either launched a rocket and/or small arms and shot down the chopper, it crashed and burned on the mountain side. No one survived the crash - 9 or 10 Engineer troops from the 173rd Engineers, a Major in charge of II Corp Engineering, and the pilot and crew. The chopper was late going south because the troops were late coming in from the field, and the Major held the chopper until they could get back in. The original report in February 1968 said that the chopper crash was due to hostle enemy action. I found out recently from relatives of one of the Engineers - they were told a different story and none of the families received the Purple Heart posthumously - nore did any of the families or children of those lost ever recieve what was guaranteed them by the Government. A friend named Sam from the 2/35 Ranger Recon 173rd knew of the incident when I asked him recently - but his patrol was working southwest that day and didn't see the actual action. If you know of any of the guys from the 173rd that were on S&D or Recon that day and saw the fire fight that brought down the chopper, I would sure appreciate hearing from you. Also, I would like to hear from anyone else who knew any of the men on that chopper including the Pilot and crew or anyone else on board. I know its been along time, but it sure won't hurt to try and correct the fowl up of some stupid beaucrat in DC - at least their families will get some satisfaction from knowing that their son/father/brother was not lost in veign - they died bravely in combat, with honor. And they should be remembered that way. Thank you.

Our unit was involved in the battles of New Ginea, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Tacatry Ridge south of Manila, the liberation of Manila and Nichols Field and then Okanawa for staging for the main assault. The 11th ABN was also assigned to escort MacArthur and party ashore after signing of the surrender. I was assigned to B-674. Message is: May Day Offensive, TSN AB, 1968: I would like to locate the Pilot and Crew of the USAF C-141 that left Ton Son Nhut AFB on or about the morning of 3May68 through 7May68 with a full cargo of "Silver Boxes", aluminum caskets, in route for Hichum AFB, Hawaii and on to Travis AFB, Calif. This was the last aircraft to leave Ton Son Nhut during the May Day Offensive on Saigon and the AFB before the runway and airbase was closed for repairs. The C-141 in question sustained ground fire on take off and had to make an unscheduled landing at ( ? - could have been Clarke, Okinawa, or Guam ) due to damage sustained to hydraulic, electrical, and other systems due to enemy ground fire. Upon landing at ( ? ) AFB the left wing of the C-141 was damaged when it struck an unoccupied troop bus that was parked on the tarmak - the bus helped stop the aircraft. There were five or six soles on board - the crew, an Army Special Forces First Sargent, and my self. I would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of that aircraft and crew.
